Dear Friends,
The heart of our mission at Dumb Ox Ministries is to explore the depths of what it means to be man and woman in light of St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. This journey invites us into the depths of our hearts where we find beauty and challenges along the way. When we receive the truth of our identity as unique and unrepeatable men and women, and when we are healed of distortions and freed from lies, we are empowered to love in true freedom. But, confusion reigns right now in our culture. Without a rich vision presented in a compelling way from multiple angles, confusion instead of clarity will continue to inform our culture’s approach to moral decisions, social justice, institutional policy, civil law, and more.
How authentic masculinity and femininity is lived, expressed, and given as a unique gift to another remains a sincere, challenging and critical question for many today. God is calling us to engage these questions and challenges with pastoral hearts empowered by charity. This is why we are excited to partner with Dr. Jennifer Miller in her project entitled, Redeeming Gender. In her words, this project involves an investigation into:
“[T]he way that Catholics live out their masculinity and femininity in several diverse cultures, enriching a theology that is firmly rooted in the Scriptural idea of sex with a more universal experience of gender. To this end, I will conduct interviews with Catholic scholars and theologians around the world, from May 2019-June 2020, including Native American reservations and Acadiana (the United States); Mexico (Latin America); Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda (Africa); the Middle East; Italy, France, Switzerland, and Hungary (Europe); and Vietnam and India (Asia) that will enable me to mine the “treasures hidden in the various forms of human culture, by…which the nature of man himself is more clearly revealed…[to] profit the Church…” (Gaudium et Spes, 44)
I will be traveling to the Middle East to join and assist Dr. Miller in her research process March 1-14, 2020, and we need your prayers and financial help to cover this leg of the journey! We will be spending the majority of our time in Bethlehem and Jerusalem, conducting interviews with:
We will bring all of the intentions of our benefactors with us as we go to the birthplace of Christ and explore the land where He lived. We will be praying and walking in the footsteps of Our Lord, where Jesus Christ-- the center of your history and mine— taught, prayed, suffered, died, and rose again. As Dr. Miller says:
"To go to the Holy Land is to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, the Word made Flesh, who first affirmed the innate dignity of both men and women, by insisting that they would be resurrected male and female (Matt 22:29-30). Just as His ministry took place in the context of His male apostles and the women who accompanied Him, and His Passion is framed by the reference to the woman who anointed him for his burial (Mk 14:3-9) and the centurion who glorified God (Lk 23:47), the gift of His teaching can only be fully received when both men and women are willing to accept it. Hence, our differences as a woman and a man will allow us to better understand together the various nuances and gifts of masculinity and femininity hidden in His people and in His culture (cf. Gaudium et Spes, 44)."
We need your support. First, we need your prayers! Human identity and sexuality are, without a doubt, targets of the enemy. Please pray for protection over this entire project and all of those involved. Secondly, we need your financial support. We need to fundraise $5,000 to cover the cost of airfare, ground travel, food, lodging, interpreters, and a local guide on select days of the two week journey. Your donation is tax-deductible by law. Please donate by scrolling back to the top of this page. We want to bring your prayer intentions with us, so we will reach out to all of our donors to get prayer intentions prior to the trip. If you cannot donate, but would like us to bring your intentions with us, please email me at [email protected]
